STAFF MEMBER EVALUATED AT HOSPITAL AFTER EXTINGUISHING FIRE
Wauconda police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 9:57 a.m. Thursday November 8, 2018 to a report of an electrical fire in an overhead light in a girls locker room at Wauconda High School, 555 North Main Street.

Wauconda Fire District firefighter/paramedics on arrival reported no smoke or fire showing outside the school, and were directed by school officials to the girls locker room where there was an electrical fire. A school staff member had used a fire extinguisher to put out most or all of the fire before firefighters arrived.

Four Wauconda High School employees were evaluated by emergency medical technicians, and one was transported to a hospital for an evaluation of non-life threatening injuries.

Damage was estimated at $30,000. Students were allowed back into the main competition gymnasium, but officials decided to cancel classes for the rest of the day Thursday because of the proximity of the locker room to the school cafeteria.

District 118 Superintendent Daniel J. Coles said in a message on the high school’s website that Wauconda High School will be in session on Friday, November 9, 2018.  A fire and smoke mitigation company was on site at Wauconda High School since early afternoon and as a result, the school is able to return to normal operations. The health department has inspected the school kitchen area and has deemed it ready for use.

Personal items that were affected by smoke in the lockers will be cleaned before the items are given back to students.

The cause of the fire was still under investigation late Thursday.

The Wauconda Fire District was assisted by firefighters from Lake Zurich, Round Lake, Fox River Grove, Grayslake and Nunda Township in McHenry County.
