Chicago police, firefighters and paramedics responded about 8:20 a.m. to the block of 5600 West Corcoran Place to a report of gunfire and a person shot. A Safe Passage worker was caught in the crossfire and was shot in the back. He was seriously injured when shot during an exchange of gunfire between two offenders nearby in the South Austin neighborhood.
The male Safe Passage worker, believed to be in his 20s, was transported to Loyola University Medical Center in serious condition. Police report they do not believe he was the intended target.
Area North Detectives are investigating, and no arrests have been announced.
The crime scene is located near Austin Town Hall Park and Edward K. Duke Ellington Elementary School.

The “Safe Passage Route” program was implemented by Chicago Public Schools to protect school children by placing unarmed volunteers, police officers and firefighters along designated walking routes to provide security for children en route to school. The followed a 2010-2014 time period when 114 school children were murdered in Chicago.
