SHELL CASINGS IN 2 SHOOTINGS MATCH

CPD is hosting a community meeting Wednesday night October 3, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. at the Loyola Park Fieldhouse, 1230 West Greenleaf Avenue Chicago.

Chicago police have alerted the public that a masked gunman appears to be targeting people at random in the city’s Roger’s Park neighborhood at random. The alert followed the second fatal shooting in the Roger’s Park neighborhood in two days (36 hours apart).

Chicago Police released a surveillance picture showing the shooter dressed entirely in black. The suspect’s face was covered by a ski mask.

Eliyahu Moscowitz, 24, was shot in the head at about 10:20 p.m. Monday October 1, 2018 on the Loyola Park path near Lunt Avenue, Chicago. Moscowitz was pronounced dead at the scene. The Cook County Medical Examiner said he died of a gunshot wound to the head.

Police are investigating the shooting of Moscowitz as connected to the fatal shooting of Douglass Watts, 73, who was fatally shot in the head Sunday morning, September 30, 2018 while walking his dogs in the block of 1400 Sherwin Avenue. Watts shooting scene is less than 2800 feet from Moscowitz shooting. The Sherwin Avenue shooting near Sheridan Road may have been a botched robbery.

Tuesday afternoon Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said the shell casings discovered in both shootings were found to be a match. Johnson said police are looking for the same suspect and the same gun in both shootings. Police have initially not found any other connections between the two male victims.

“The shell casings were found at both crime scenes from the 1100-block of West Lunt and the 1400-block of West Sherwin Avenue from Sunday were found to be a match. This means both shootings came from the same gun and likely the same suspect.”

— Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson

Initially, police thought the Watts murder might have been connected to a robbery, but now police say that in both shootings, none of the victims’ belongings were taken.

Moscowitz was a member of the orthodox Jewish community. According to Moscowitz’s father, his son was dressed in traditional Jewish attire and a long beard. Moscowitz was also part of the Pokémon Go community in the Rogers Park neighborhood.

The two shootings in Rogers Park follow the shooting of Northwestern University PhD psychology student Shane Colombo, who was shot in the abdomen and killed by a stray bullet in the Rogers Park neighborhood Sunday September 2, 2018. Colombo was only in the City of Chicago four hours when he was hit while walking near Clark Street and Howard Street.
