US Coast Guard, Firefighters Search for Missing Kayaker in Lake Michigan Between Highland Park and Lake Forest

U.S. Coast Guard crews were expected to resume their search Tuesday morning for a kayaker who is missing after his boat capsized overnight in Lake Michigan near north suburban Lake Forest. CBS 2’s Mike Puccinelli reports.

Lake Forest and Highland Park firefighter/paramedics responded about 10:42 PM Monday August 27, 2018 to a report of two people overboard from a capsized kayak in Lake Michigan near the block of 300 South Bluffs Edge Drive Lake Forest, Il . Police and firefighter/paramedics received a report that a man ran up and knocked on the door of a home in the 300 block of South Bluffs Edge Drive in Lake Forest to get help and notify rescuers.

The man said he was swimming about an hour after his kayak capsized. He said his friend was still in the water. The US Coast Guard responded with a boat and a helicopter. The US Coast Guard helicopter responded from Muskegon, Michigan. The US Coast Guard Boat was dispatched about 11:13 PM.

Both men began to swim back to shore, but one of them slipped under water and did not resurface, according to a US Coast Guard release.

The US Coast Guard searched the waters off of the North Shore with a boat and helicopter until about 2 a.m. Monday. They resumed searching again later Tuesday morning. Marine units from Lake Forest and Highland Park also were involved in the search, according to the US Coast Guard. Tuesday, in daylight, the Coast Guard searched an area of more than 130 square miles from as far north as Waukegan Harbor and as far south as Wilmette Harbor, according to a Coast Guard news release.

Foot searches were also conducted along the beachfront and nearby properties.

The kayakers had launched from Park Avenue Beach in Highland Park. Witnesses at the boat launch said experienced boaters advised the two men against using small kayaks to head out into Lake Michigan open waters — especially without Life Jackets.

More severe conditions of winds and waves are often not visible from shore.
