Teen Drowns in Lake Michigan Near Rogers Park While NWS Chicago Beach Hazards Statement in Effect

13 YEAR-OLD GIRL DROWNS NEAR LOYOLA BEACH

A 13-year-old girl drowned in Lake Michigan near Rogers Park Friday night about 7:30 p.m.

Chicago police, firefighters and paramedics responded about 7:30 p.m. Friday to 1209 West Greenleaf Avenue at Loyola Beach to a report that three people were in Lake Michigan water, hanging on to a seawall. Five Chicago police officers initially attempted a rescue. One teenage girl was missing, and was discovered about 25 yards off shore more than an hour after the initial call for help. An EMS Plan 1 was activated for the people rescued in the water, and as a precaution for rescuers.

The girls that was found after being in the water over an hour was 13 years old. She was transported to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, where she was listed in critical condition, and later died. She was identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office as Darinanne Torres, a resident of the North Side of Chicago.

A 14 year-old girl was transported to a hospital, where her condition was stabilized.

Three boys were also rescued from the water, but did not require treatment.

Dangerous Lake Michigan waters were forecast and a National Weather Service Chicago Beach Hazards Statement was active at the time of the incident. A statement that expired at 9:00 p.m. was extended until midnight Saturday/Sunday, July 7, 2018.
