Kane County Sheriff’s deputies and Maple Park Fire Protection District firefighter/paramedics responded about 11:20 p.m. Friday July 13, 2018 to a report of a crash with entrapment on the racecourse at Sycamore Speedway, at 50W112 Old State Road in unincorporated Virgil Township. A collision occurred between two race cars during the Figure 8 event — a form of stock car racing where the track is designed to intersect itself like the number ‘8’.

Firefighters extricated the driver, Timothy G. Erjavac, 47, of Morton Grove, and transported him to Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital in DeKalb, where he was later pronounced dead.

No other injuries were reported in the crash. A rainstorm affected the crash at the end of the night and two remaining events were canceled.

The crash occurred on private property during an organized event, deputies do not anticipate issuing any citations, according to the release.

Sycamore Speedway, with a clay track, is located in unincorporated Virgil Township on the west side of Kane County near DeKalb County, and north of Maple Park, Illinois. Sycamore Speedway is about 26 west on a straight line from Schaumburg.

Figure 8 racing is popular in the United States, and the increased risk of collisions in this type of racing is acknowledged by participants and event organizers. Figure 8 racing began about 1945, and was frequently televised on ABC’s Wide World of Sports in the 1960s.
