Waukegan police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 11:00 p.m. Friday July 13, 2018 to a report of a fight and a shooting at the intersection of Genesee and Clayton Street.

Waukegan police and firefighter/paramedics upon arrival discovered a 19 year-old male/black teen of Waukegan unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the dead, and a 20 year-old man of Beach Park, also with a gunshot wound.

The 19 year-old Waukegan teen, identified as Daiyon Bolden, was transported by Waukegan firefighter/paramedics to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead about 5:00 a.m. Saturday.

The 20 year-old Beach Park man, whose identity was not released, was initially assessed to have non-life-threatening injures, and was also transported by Waukegan firefighter/paramedics to a nearby hospital.

The shooting occurred about 11:00 p.m. in the street at the intersection of Genesee Street and Clayton street about an hour after a car festival “Scoop the Loop” was held from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. The intersection is the location of the Jack Benny Plaza at the southwest corner, and the Gennesee Theatre at the northeast corner. The event address is listed as Genesee Street and Grand Avenue, one block north of the shooting scene. The event is held on Genessee Street down to Washington Street and east to Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue.

A 15-year-old Waukegan male suspect was accused of fatally shooting the Waukegan teen and shooting and wounding the Beach Park man. The 15-year-old suspect was taken into custody at the shooting scene by police that responded to the shooting incident. The suspect was charged with First-Degree Murder and Aggravated Battery with a firearm early Saturday, according to police. The male juvenile suspect, who is currently not being identified because of his age, was in custody at the Depke Juvenile Detention Center in Vernon Hills.

Police detectives described the shooting incident as “carry-over from an ongoing feud, when those involved saw each other,” according to a Waukegan police release.

There were no alerts about the shooting on the official Facebook page for Waukegan Police Department or the Scoop the Loop event. The successful and popular annual event, scheduled July 13, 2018 from 6pm-10pm and Saturday July 14, 2018 from 11am-10pm includes a car show, food, live music, and a carnival with rides and games. The Scoop the Loop annual event began in 1986 with an estimated 10,000 to 12,000 attending the first night. The event was open for business and fun on Saturday.

An autopsy for Daiyon Bolden is scheduled for Sunday afternoon, July 15, 2018.

Court information for the 15 year-old male juvenile charged with First Degree Murder and Aggravated Battery with a Firearm was not immediately available.
