Chicago police marine unit M2 and Chicago firefighters and divers responded about 12:30 p.m. Saturday July 28, 2018 to a report of a body recovered about 6 nautical miles or 7 miles east of North Avenue. The body recovered by a Chicago Police Marine Unit in Lake Michigan on Saturday has been identified as the missing Race to Mackinac sailor from Chicago, Jon Santarelli.

Santarelli’s body was initially found by a private salvage company.

North Avenue and the North Avenue Beach line up with the lake about 1.5 mile north of Navy Pier. Lake Michigan is about 50 miles wide at the latitude of North Avenue Beach.

“On behalf of the Chicago Yacht Club, the Race to Mackinac, and all competitors as well as the entire sailing community, I’d like to express our deepest condolences to the Santarelli family.”
