Palatine responded about 12:03 AM Monday June 25, 2018 to a report of a vehicle burglary, shots fired with a police pursuit on Victoria Drive and Newkirk Lane Palatine, IL. Police received a report that five suspects were involved in a burglary to motor vehicle incident with shots fired on Victoria Lane west of Newkirk Lane near Lake Louise in Palatine. It was initially unknown whether shots were fired at police or at residents in the neighborhood, but later Monday police revealed that the offenders fired three shots at the owner of the car when he confronted the offenders in his car.

Nobody was shot in Palatine, but the car owner was able to provide a description to police. He described offenders fleeing in two vehicles — a black 2017 Mercedes and another vehicle. Police determined that the black 2017 Mercedes was stolen in Deer Park. The other vehicle was considered by police to be a chase vehicle, used by offenders when illegally acquiring other vehicles.

Arlington Heights police reported last seeing a vehicle or vehicles involved in the burglary on eastbound I-90 near Arlington Heights Road. It is unknown if Arlington Heights police happened to be on I-90 or on Route 53, or whether the Arlington Heights police officer spotted the vehicle passing by on streets in Arlington Heights.

A Des Plaines police officer also spotted the offenders in the Mercedes Benz further east on I-90, but the short chase was terminated.

Next, the offender’s vehicles were spotted on I-90 southbound (eastbound) at Ashland Avenue about 1:52 a.m. The offenders vehicles were described as a black 2017 Mercedes SUV and a black Lincoln MKZ sedan. An unmarked Palatine police vehicle was following the vehicles and Illinois State Police joined the police pursuit about 1:54 a.m. The pursuit was passing North Avenue by 1:55 a.m. and passing Ohio Street by 1:56 a.m.

The police pursuit also occurred on southbound I-294, west on Ogden Avenue, north on Illinois Route 83 and eastbound on I-88 near Oak Brook, and then eastbound on the Eisenhower Expressway (I-290). Speeds were reported as high as 110 to 130 mph.

The suspects also reportedly rammed a Chicago police vehicle during the pursuit, passing through west suburban Westchester. The ramming crash was not immediately confirmed by police.

Eventually at about 2:26 a.m. at least one of the vehicles crashed into an IDOT truck and a Toyota Camry on eastbound I-290 near Racine Avenue.

Two male suspects were arrested and taken into custody at the crash scene, and a weapon was also recovered at the crash scene. Police are investigating, and there was initially no additional information about which vehicle crashed and whether the other three suspects were anywhere near the crash scene of captured later. ABC 7 Chicago video described a Mercedes sedan at the crash scene, so it is unknown whether the earlier Mercedes SUV description or the Lincoln MKZ description was a mistaken description.
