Extra Alarm Warehouse Fire at 21st Street and Lippincott Ave, Philadelphia

Philadelphia firefighters responded about 6:26 p.m. Friday May 18, 2018 to a fire in a 4-story vacant warehouse about 165 feet by 85 feet on Lippincott Avenue between 20th Street and 21st Street in North Philadelphia (Swampoodle). The fire involved a collapse of the building and threatened exposure buildings, especially to the east of the warehouse near Elijah’s Auto Repair.

Thick black smoke was rolling from east to west toward the Allegheny West and Wynnefield Heights neighborhood in Philadelphia. Winds during the extra-alarm were ranging from 16 to 23 mph with gusts up to 26 to 33 mph Friday afternoon and evening — as measured by the NWS at Philadelphia International Airport.

The fire response was elevated to a 2nd alarm by 6:41 p.m. ET.
The fire response was elevated to a 3rd alarm by 6:53 p.m. ET.
The fire response was elevated to a 4th Alarm by 7:00 p.m. ET.
The fire response was elevated to a 5th Alarm by 7:53 p.m. ET.

There was a secondary fire incident involving a building fire at 22nd Street and Clearfield at about 7:24 p.m. That fire was under control by about 7:33 p.m.

The apparently vacant warehouse, which showed glass windows removed or broken in an August, 2014 Google Street Map view, is reported to have been used as textile equipment factory.
