Man Shoots Himself, Dies Near the North Lawn of the White House, Washington D.C.

A man shot himself in front of the North Lawn of the White House on Saturday, March 3,2018. The Secret Service reported the incident involved a self-inflicted gunshot wound that occurred on the north fence line. The DC Metropolitan Police Department reported about 1:07 pm. Saturday March 3, 2018 that an adult male was deceased at the scene.

The victim suffered a single gunshot wound and no shots were fired by Secret Service personnel. Initially, the condition or status of the victim was not released by the Secret Service.

“Secret Service personnel are responding to reports of a person who allegedly suffered a self-inflicted gun shot wound along the north fence line of @WhiteHouse,” the Secret Service tweeted.

The Secret Service also tweeted that pedestrian and vehicular traffic around the White House has been affected by the incident.

President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump are at Mar-a-Lago in Florida, and are scheduled to return to Washington D.C. Saturday night for the annual Gridiron Club Dinner. President Donald Trump announced in mid-February 2018 that he will attend the dinner — his first press dinner as president.

The Gridiron Club of Washington, D.C. is the oldest and one of the most prestigious journalistic organizations in Washington, D.C. with about 65 active members representing major newspapers, news services, news magazines and broadcast networks. Membership is by invitation only and has traditionally been offered almost exclusively to Washington newspaper bureau chiefs.

The Gridiron Club is best known for the annual dinner which traditionally features the United States Marine Band. The dinner features satirical musical skits by Gridiron Club members and remarks by the President of the United States and representatives of each political party. The skits and speeches by various politicians are expected to be self-deprecating or otherwise sharply comedic.
