WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY: Monday’s Snow Total Looking Like 2.0″ by 11PM

... #ad▼

A snow depth forecast of 3.7″ WAS the early morning forecast for Arlington Heights and nearby communities Monday February 5, 2018. However, this snow system so far appears to have less punch than forecast. Light snow and flurries began about 2:30 p.m., NOT 12 PM as was the initial forecast start time. Snow accumulation which was expected to be 2.1″ by 6 PM is only 0.6″. Also, deeper snow accumulations appear to be far south, instead of far west as was initially forecast.

Winds will be 6-8 MPH shifting gradually from the southwest to the northwest by 4:00 a.m.

The air temperature forecast was botched today. A high temperature of 17°F DID NOT hold from 2 PM to 9 PM Monday. Instead air temperature held at about 11-12°F.

Air temperature was expected to fall to 15°F to 14°F by 11 PM Monday when the snow ends, but now it is expected to rise to 16°F from 9:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Air temperature was rising from 10°F at 6:00 p.m.

The snow-to-liquid ratio is expected to be dry at 16-17:1, and possibly as high has 25:1 (very dry fluffy snow).

DIY shovelers who wait until Tuesday morning after dawn will face 7°F air temperatures and a -5°F wind chill with NW winds 6 MPH from 5:00 AM to 7:00 AM. Sunrise Tuesday morning is 6:59 a.m.

Another 1.8″ of snow are expected to fall between 6PM Tuesday night and 6AM Wednesday morning.

Deeper snow is forecast for the southwest suburbs and far west suburbs, including Aurora, Joliet, Naperville. The close edge of deeper snow if expected along a line from Joliet to Rockford, and Joliet to Pontiac, and then west to the Mississippi River.
