Wind gusts over 30 miles per hour were widespread throughout Chicagoland the past 24 hours, causing problems with power lines, fanning a fire at a detached garage fire in Hoffman Estates, and possibly causing a building to collapse about 6:00 a.m. Sunday February 25, 2018 on Simpson Street near Darrow Avenue in Evanston.

Chicago police blocked Illinois Street to protect people from a piece of metal that was blowing loose from a high-rise apartment.

Wind gusts peaked overnight about 1 AM to 5 AM, ranging from 45 to 60 miles an hour.

There were also widespread power outages in Chicagoland, but ComEd reported only about 600 customers without power Sunday morning. At 5:50 p.m. there were only sporadic outages in Chicagoland involving less than 10 customers each. There were more outages in the area just west of the southern tip of Lake Michigan, especially near Oak Lawn, Orland Park, and Thornton.

The past 24 hours, the highest wind gust of 59 mph was reported at the Harrison-Dever Crib in Lake Michigan about 2.5 miles east of North Avenue Beach and Lincoln Park Zoo.

O’Hare Airport peaked at 46 mph; Midway Airport, 52 mph; Wheeling Chicago Executive Airport, 47 mph; and DuPage Airport, 52 mph.
