The wind is southeast at 8 mph in Chicagoland, and that means that most of Arlington Heights north of Northwest Highway is breathing air that is fouled up by a manufacturing plant on Arthur Avenue between Northwest Highway and Central Road.
Stand outside in your front yard or backyard and check for yourself. You will likely smell a fruity, sort of Febreze type of smell.
The odor has been described with a few different characteristics:
Smells like an artificial apple deodorant
Smells like a cleaning solution
Smells like Febreze filling the entire neighborhood
On days when there are southerly winds, the odor and air quality is especially noticeable in the Stonegate neighborhood, just north of Northwest Highway near Davis Street.
Today, Thursday January 25, 2018 with southeast winds at about 8 mph, the air is carrying a distinctively annoying odor.
The air is particularly annoying when there are low wind speeds from the south or southeast.
While the source of the odor has not been confirmed, a business known as Multi-Pack Solutions is located at the north end of the large commercial building at the northeast corner of Central Road and Arthur Avenue in Mount Prospect, also just west of Melas Park in Mount Prospect.
According to the official website for Multi-Pack Solutions, their Chicago, Illinois facility is located at 1804 West Central Road in Mt. Prospect, Illinois.
The company describes the manufacturing plant at the address as the world leader in water-soluble pouch contract packaging and manufacturing, with 175,000 square feet of space.
They describe that their high-speed and high-volume pouch production at the location leads the industry for both liquids and powders, with expertise in laundry, dish, agriculture, and cleaners.

The Cardinal — Arlington Cardinal has created a Facebook Group page where you are encouraged to report recognition of the odor — whether your are an Arlington Heights or Mount Prospect resident or an employee that works in the area.
If you post a report about air quality, please describe the odor or air quality, whether it was disagreeable or not, note the date and time observed, and provide weather conditions — doesn’t have to be detailed — but if you want, you can copy and paste from Current Conditions at ohare.chgowx.com
Currently it is not known whether this will become an actionable issue, but at this stage there has been enough discussion to warrant logging observations to determine whether there is a problem.
