Earthquake Magnitude 7.6 in Caribbean Sea North of Honduras; Tsunami Alerts for Jamaica, Mexico, Honduras, Cuba, Belize, Costa Rica

An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.6 struck the Caribbean Sea Tuesday evening, according to the United States Geological Survey

The USGS said that hazardous tsunami waves were “possible” for coasts located within 1,000 kilometers of the earthquake epicenter — which includes coasts of Jamaica, Mexico, Honduras, Cuba, Belize, Costa Rica and more. The NWS stated that no US coast would be affected by a possible Tsunami.

Tsunami waves reaching 0.3 to 1 meter above the tide level were considered a possibility, according the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

The ocean earthquake shook windows in the Honduran capital of Tegucigalpa, but no damage was immediately reported.
