Country singer Jason Aldean, who was performing on stage when the Las Vegas mass shooting began, paid tribute to both the victims of the mass shooting and the late musician Tom Petty on Saturday Night Live. Paramedics were dispatched to Tom Petty’s home Sunday, October 1, 2017 at 10:45 p.m. PDT — about 37 minutes after the Las Vegas mass shooting began at 10:08 p.m. PDT. Petty died on Monday October 2, 2017 at 8:40 p.m. PDT.
The star opened SNL with a moving rendition of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ track “I Won’t Back Down.”
Before Aldean’s performance, he addressed the devastating mass shooting in Las Vegas …
“This week we witnessed one of the worst tragedies in American history. Like everyone, I’m struggling to understand what happened that night and how to pick up the pieces and start to heal.
”So many people are hurting. There are children, parents, brothers, sisters, friends, they’re all part of our family. So I want to say to them, we hurt for you and we hurt with you.
“But you can be sure that we are going to walk through these tough times together every step of the way. Because when America is at its best our bond and our spirit in unbreakable.”
