Chicago Cubs Beat Washington Nationals 9-8 and Advance to NLDS

... #ad▼

The Los Angeles Dodgers will host the Chicago Cubs in Game 1 of the NL Championship Series on Saturday, October 14, 2017, start time 7:08 p.m.

In the fifth inning, Javier Baez struck out, but the ball got past Nationals catcher Matt Weiters as he was hit by Javier Baez’s backswing in a possible blown call by the umpires. If the catcher was hit, the call should have been strike three, and the ball declared dead, instead of a drop third strike play. The inning would have been over with the Cubs leading 5-4. Currently backswings are not reviewable. The home plate umpire presumably did not see the backswing hitter Wieters. The Cubs took a 6-4 lead.

The fifth inning was the turning point for the Chicago Cubs included Addison Russell’s two-run double, a bases-loaded hit by pitch, and a disputed dropped third strike followed by a throwing error by catcher Matt Weiters.

The Cubs led 1-0, then trailed 4-1, 4-3, and then led 7-4, 8-6 and 9-7 and 9-8, in Game 5, which lasted more than 4 1/2 hours and ended just before midnight CDT on Thursday and after midnight Friday in Washington DC. Bryce Harper struck out in the bottom of the ninth while trying to keep the Nationals alive, and while facing Cubs pitcher Wade Davis.
