A female police officer was shot and killed in an unprovoked attack while she was sitting in a large police mobile command unit van on the south side of 183rd Street near Creston Avenue in New York City.

NYPD police officers responded about 12:30 am. Wednesday July 5, 2017 to the area of East 183rd Street, near Creston Avenue, in the Fordham Heights neighborhood after an unprovoked police shooting of a female officer sitting in a police command truck. The female police officer was shot and killed by a single round from a.38-caliber, five-shot Ruger revolver through a passenger-side window, according to Deputy Chief Jason Wilcox, the commander of detectives in the Bronx.

Officer Miosotis Familia, 48, was shot and killed early Wednesday while sitting in the police command unit in the Fordham Heights in the Bronx, in what the New York City police commissioner called an “unprovoked attack” and an assassination. The gunman was killed, the police said.

The officer, Miosotis Familia, 48, was transported to St. Barnabas Hospital, where she was pronounced dead about three hours after the shooting.

Officer Familia, who was in uniform, was sitting in a mobile command unit — a truck-size police step van type vehicle that is big enough to house equipment and several officers — on the south side of East 183rd Street, near Creston Avenue, in the Fordham Heights neighborhood.

Immediately after the shooting, Officer Familia’s partner, Vincent Maher, called for backup, and two other NYPD police officers encountered the suspect, who was running on Morris Avenue, about one block away. When the gunman drew a silver revolver, they opened fire, killing him. NYPD identified the gunman was identified as Alexander Bonds, 34, who also uses the name John Bonds.

A bystander was struck by a bullet in that shootout between NYPD and the gunman. The shot bystander is reported to be in stable condition, according to police commissioner, James P. O’Neill.

The last unprovoked fatal gun ambush of NYPD police officers occurred on December 20, 2014, when Ismaaiyl Brinsley shot two officers — Wenjian Liu and Rafael L. Ramos — while they were sitting in a patrol car in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn. They were fatally shot at point-blank range by Ismaaiyl Brinsley, who had traveled to the city from Baltimore. Brinsley had a history of mental illness. He killed himself with the gun same gun he used to kill the NYPD officers.
