The new Microsoft Surface Laptop was announced at Tuesday’s Microsoft Windows 10 S event. The Surface Laptop is a 13.5-inch, $999 laptop that’s designed to work with the company’s new operating system.

The Microsoft Surface Laptop base model, which will debut on June 15th has a starting price of $999. The laptop includes Intel’s latest Core i5 processor, 4GB of RAM, and 128GB SSD. Microsoft is using a 13.5-inch PixelSense display with a resolution of 2256 x 1504.

The new Surface Laptop comes with support for the Surface Pen and touch. It has a 3:2 aspect ratio, similar to a Surface Pro 4 or Surface Book display.

There is no USB-C port. On the right-hand side there’s a Surface connector for power and dock connections.

On the left there’s a regular USB port, a mini DisplayPort, and a headphone jack.

Microsoft claims the battery life is 14.5 hours on Windows 10 S.

Windows 10 S is the operating system that powers the Surface Laptop, which can only run apps from the Windows Store. Users can upgrade to Windows 10 to obtain full installation capabilities, including installing Google Chrome and other traditional desktop apps. The upgrade costs $49.

 WINDOWS 10S …

Microsoft unveiled Windows 10 S on May 2, 2017. The new operating system is a feature-limited version of Windows 10 designed primarily for low-end devices in the education market, such as the Surface Laptop. The OS restricts software installation to applications obtained from Windows Store; but the device may be upgraded to Windows 10 Pro for a $49 fee to enable unrestricted software installation. Windows 10 S also involves a faster initial setup and login process, and allows devices to be provisioned using a USB drive with the Windows Intune for Education platform. All Windows 10 S devices will include a free one-year subscription to Minecraft: Education Edition.

With Windows 10 S and the new Surface Laptop, Microsoft is targeting Google ChromeBooks in the education market.
