Crash Comparison Shows the Difference 20 Years Has Made to Car Safety

WIRED Watching car crash tests is horrifying and mesmerizing in equal measure. These crash tests show how much safer cars are after two decades of improved design.

An older car rattled the passenger or driver much more than a newer car. The driver’s side door was much more mangled, probably making extrication much more difficult. Airbags keep the vehicle occupants in cushioned safety in the newer vehicle.

Euro NCAP provides consumer information on the safety of new cars. Euro NCAP is the European New Car Assessment Programme making for making cars safer.

The European program is modelled after the New Car Assessment Program (NCAP), introduced in 1979 by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
