Mayor Rahm Emanuel Responds to President-Elect Donald Trump, Saying Chicago to Remain a Sanctuary City.

President-elect Donald Trump said Sunday, November 13, 2016 that deportations of undocumented immigrants with criminal records would begin immediately under his administration.

Sanctuary cities are defined as cities where police are not required to notify customs and immigration officials if they encounter undocumented immigrants. There are 37 sanctuary cities around the country.

Local governments in certain cities in the United States began designating themselves as sanctuary cities during the 1980s.

In an Op-Ed article in the New York Times on April 3, 2013 co-authored with Luis V. Gutierrez, the co-authors wrote the cost of applying for citizenship is too high. They said that at $680, an employee earning the federal minimum wage would have to work for more than two months to pay for an application for himself or herself, a spouse and two children.
