Talent runs deep in the Chip Davis family Watch Chip’s youngest daughter, Elyse prepare for her riveting rendition of the Christmas classic, Greensleeves in this short video clip.
Mannheim Steamroller, founded by Chip Davis, is the only group to perform twice at the Lighting of the National Christmas Tree, but when Chip Davis was getting his music career started, an advisor told him that performing Christmas songs would ruin the chances of success for his musical group.
To date the group sold about 28 million albums in the United States alone. Mannheim Steamroller is known primarily for its Fresh Aire series of albums, which blend classical music with elements of new age and rock. Mannheim Steamroller is also famous for modern recordings of Christmas music. An annual Mannheim Steamroller Christmas concert tour utilizes two cover bands which tour simultaneously.
On the WYCC public television presentation, Greensleeves was performed by female vocalist, Elyse Davis, who is the youngest daughter of Chip Davis. The unique performance is haunting and beautiful.
Greensleeves is a traditional English folk song and tune from the 1500s in the era of Henry VIII of England, possibly with promiscusous references, but Christmas and New Year texts were associated with the Greensleeves starting about 1686. By the 19th century almost every printed collection of Christmas carols included some version of words and music together, most of them ending with the refrain “On Christmas Day in the morning.”
The Christmas carol “What Child Is This” is set to the melody of Greensleeves.
