Sebastian: “30 Years Ago If You Liked to Dress Up As a Baby, Nobody Knew That; You Did That in the Privacy of Your Own Home” … Until Mount Prospect Store Opened

CBS 2’s Audrina Bigos reports on the Tykables Adult Baby Store controversy in Mount Prospect.

In Sebastian Maniscalco’s standup comedy routine at the Chicago Theatre, he mentioned that there are adults that like to dress up as a baby. A lot of people might have thought that he was just setting up a hypothetical example of weirdness that’s come to light by the Internet.

Surprise, it’s real. And it’s here in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. The Adult Babies and Diaper Lovers community recently got their brick and mortar store “Tykables” in Mount Prospect after owner John-Michael Williams opened the first such store in the United States. He says he does 99 percent of his business online.

Williams says he’s working with the Village of Mount Prospect to alleviate any concerns, and people under 18 won’t be allowed inside, especially after concerned parents didn’t like the idea that a giant Legos display in the “Tykables” front store window might attract young children.

Mount Prospect leaders aren’t so sure they can do anything about the surprise business that has raised suspicions that the store might open the door to indecent fetish activity. On the surface the store sells diapers that could be used for medical use, but behind the locked doors that require signaling the business reps inside with a doorbell, some neighbors are wondering what alternative business opportunities exist — and whether they’re really legal. Or whether this is some far-fetched publicity stunt for Tykables.

Comedy Routine Long Before Tykables Opened in Mount Prospect

“You got some weird fetish some weird thing you do?

If you’re an adult, and you like to dress up as a baby, there’s a website for you.

Thirty years ago if you liked to dress up as a baby, nobody knew that. You did that in the privacy of your own home. If you ever came out of your house with a diaper on, your neighbor would go, ‘Look at this sh*# … call the FBI … get this sh*# out of the neighborhood, huh-right?’ It was handled. But today, just throw it in the Google, ‘I like to dress up as a BABY’ … Next thing you know they’re at the Hilton on a Saturday with 863 people that like to do this sh*#. Something’s wrong in the country, OK?”
