Grand Rapids Police Tell Catch-a-Predator Vigilante to Stop His YouTube Predator Sting Operations

The vigilante who made headlines for videotaping encounters with alleged sexual predators posted a new video Sunday, but police say they will not pursue charges in the April 30, 2016 case. (May 3, 2016)

A vigilante, identified as Zach Sweers is credited with obtaining evidence to bring charges against several suspects after he posed as a child online. The suspects then arranged to meet Zach Sweers’ child character for sex. At the meeting place, suspects were confronted by Sweers, armed with a camera and videotaping evidence to be used against them. In at least one case, a man accompanying Sweers was armed with a handgun, which was shown in a holster to a suspect .

The news of the vigilante operations broke in April 2016, and police said they advised against Sweers’ actions because of the potential danger. He apparently has not heeded their advice. Sweers posted a new video Sunday, May 1, 2016 that was reportedly captured on April 30 when a man carrying a holstered pistol on his waistband accompanied Sweers on a vigilante mission.

Grand Rapids police say they will not pursue charges in the April 30 case (Warning: Disturbing content).

Videos on YouTube channel “AnxietyWar” include encounters with alleged sexual predators, which follow detailed descriptions of the communications that arrange the meetings with underage girls and include the graphic descriptions of online communications with sexual predators before the arranged meetings. At a “meeting” recorded on video, one of the alleged sexual predators faints while the alleged offenses are discussed.

Apparently, Zach Sweers does not call police at the time of the meeting with the alleged sexual predator, but apparently does call the police following the encounter. At least seven men, ranging in age from 19 to 58 face criminal charges after Sweers provided Grand Rapids police with logs of his online chats and copies of his video confrontations.
