Word of the Day: Microaggressions

Microaggressions are defined as the everyday verbal, nonverbal, and environmental slights, snubs, or insults, whether intentional or unintentional, which communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative messages to target persons based solely upon their marginalized group membership.

Marginalized groups include any race; lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered (LGBT) persons; political orientation; income level; neighborhood origin; age; and individuals with disabilities.

Microaggressions result in counter microaggressions.

Microaggressions and the resulting overcorrection with political correctness (PC) is the opposite of tolerance and “minding one’s own business.”
