Ask Paul B: Do Nice Guys Finish Last? What Happened to Just Nice People?

Dear Paul B,

I am a 30 year old man, and I am a really nice person. I treat everyone fairly, regardless of their color, or how “big” they are. I work with 45 people, and I am sure that I could be mayor of everyone, if there was ever an election here. I remember people’s birthdays, and help the older people out to their cars when it is snowy or icy outside. I am not the most handsome man, but I cannot find a NICE woman anywhere. I feel that everyone wants so much more than I can give, and yet, I am an enormous giver. I would like to find a wife, but I am starting to give up, and don’t even want to call the numbers that people give me. I know that there are many single women, but they are NOT NICE. I just had to write you about this. My Mother always told me that the world can be cruel, but I don’t want to live alone forever. I had a girlfriend for two years, but she left me for a man who is very wealthy. He is also 55, and she is 27. I don’t have much money, but I do have a nice house, and I would be a great husband and Dad. Any ideas, please?

Dear Boris,

You appear to be a very pleasant, down to earth man. I believe there is someone for everyone. It is true that many of us judge others by their appearance, their job titles, names, color, height, weight, etc. People have become quite “nit picky” these days, and it is truly ridiculous to be so trivial. We are all “flawed” in some way, and we need to recognize the importance of loyalty, intelligence, sense of humor, integrity, family values, and sincerity. There are many components to ones personality, that are critically more important than one’s height, weight, or hair color. We must step back and see a person’s whole being. Before we “judge” one by their dialect, wallet size, or ethnicity. Open yourself up and you will see so much more when you take in all that a person has to offer. Say “yes” to the second date, and be of a curious nature before you give him the thumbs down. It will allow you to enjoy richer relationships, and meet many more people along your search for Mr. or Mrs. Right.. Enjoy the ride, it should be great fun!
