Apple says apps will do for the TV what they did for mobile devices–change the viewing experience. But what apps are available for the revamped Apple TV? Jefferson Graham previews.
The new AppleTV starts at $149 for a 32GB version and $199 for a 64GB version. The 4th generation AppleTV uses a new operating system, TvOS, with an associated app store allowing download of third-party apps for video, audio, games, and other content. Currently the inventory of providers is limited.
The new apps and games must take advantage of the new touchpad-enabled Siri remote. TvOS is 95% based on iOS 9 with the interface and APIs being tweaked to support the big screen.
Siri is included on the 4th generation Apple TV. The remote includes two microphones and a button to toggle on Siri, which can do all of the things Siri can do on iOS 9. Siri can also respond to requests specifically for the TV. For instance, you can ask Siri to search for a TV show or movie and it will search across multiple different sources to tell the user where the content is available to watch. It can also do things such as Play/Pause, Rewind/Fast Forward, skip back 15 seconds and temporarily turn on captioning when asked “what did he say?” or “what did he say?”, open a specific app, and more.
