After a four-hour Thursday night meeting of teachers and support staff with the Prospect Heights Elementary District 23 School Board and a federal mediator, the school board maintained their position of “best and final” offer from this Thursday morning’s meeting.

On the teachers’ website for the Prospect Heights Education Association (PHEA) the following update was published …

Update from September 24th 6:00 PM meeting

After PHEA membership resoundingly rejected the Board’s earlier proposal, PHEA offered a counter-proposal at this evenings negotiations.
PHEA lowered the percent increases from 4.5% to 4.25% in the first year
4.39% to 4.25% in the second year
the third year remains at 4.0%

The Board refused this proposal. We look forward to our next session.

Late this afternoon, the website published information that the two parties were going back to negotiate at a meeting at 6:00 p.m. following a rally at 5:30 p.m.

Also on the PHEA website, there was a paragraph that addressed the community with no sign off. The message in the paragraph accused the board of misleading the public …

Dear Community,

“The Board of Education continues to insist PHEA is not communicating with them directly but rather through the media. In fact, at 11:48 am today, the Board’s attorney and Mediator were informed via email of the PHEA vote to reject the Board’s most recent proposal. Notification through the Board attorney was the agreed upon method of communication between parties. Board President Mari-Lynn Peters continues to mislead the public regarding communication between the Board and PHEA.”

[NO SIGN OFF]

Meanwhile, the teachers’ strike continues and there are signs that parents, students and residents are getting impatient over the strike. A new group of picketers attended the rally held by the striking teachers Thursday night, but the new group supported the school board or pleaded that the strike end. One student held a sign that said, “Please agree, School’s for me!”

Another meeting of the teachers and the school board is scheduled for Friday night.

Teachers picketing last Thursday at Palatine Road and Schoenbeck Road near MacArthur Middle School and Betsy Ross Elementary School.
