Joaquin Expected To Become Major Hurricane; Forecasted Impact on United States Unknown

Forcasters at the National Hurricane Center say Joaquin has attained hurricane status and is expected become a major hurricane. But it’s still not clear whether it will hit the U.S. east coast. (Sept. 30)

The tropical cyclone Joaquin strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane in the Atlantic on Wednesday morning, but it is unknown Wednesday morning whether the hurricane will turn left into the United States or turn right toward Bermuda.

The hurricane will certainly hit the central Bahamas with heavy rain and dangerous storm surges in the next day. Strong surf is also expected to hit the east coast of Florida.

Hurricane warnings remain in effect for the Central Bahamas; #Joaquin with maximum sustained winds of 75mph.

The Atlantic storm Joaquin is now a Category 1 hurricane. Whether or not it will hit the eastern United States remains to be seen. CNN’s Chad Myers reports.
