Home Business Mortuary in Riverdale Where Bodies Found in Garage

Riverdale police called Illinois State Police investigators for assistance after four bodies and other human remains were found Wednesday at a home in the 13900 block of South Dearborn Street.

The four bodies and other human remains were found Wednesday about 7:30 p.m. in a detached alley garage. Four bodies, one box of cremated remains, and a “container of organs” were found in the garage, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. The bodies were in various stages of decomposition, according to Illinois State Police.

Investigators believe the homeowner, Anton Godfrey, who died August 29 2015, was “improperly storing bodies in his home garage, which were prepared for burial,” according to a statement from the Illinois State Police. Godfrey had a history of multiple court orders to cease and desist operating in-home mortuary practices.

In August 2013, Godfrey was fined $10,000 by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation for running an “unlicensed practice of funeral directing and embalming,” according to IDFPR records.

The bodies were examined Thursday at the Cook County medical examiner’s office, which is working to confirm their identities and notify their families.
