Wauconda police are investigating a report that a masked man attempting to rob the Kwick Shop convenience and liquor store, 112 East Liberty Street, was shot and killed by a store clerk.

Wauconda police responded just after 9:00 p.m. Sunday to a call of a robbery in progress.

Upon arrival, police learned that a Wauconda convenience store clerk shot and killed a masked man Sunday night, who the 24-year-old store clerk said was attempting to rob the store.

Upon initial investigation, police were told that the masked man entered the store, pointed a weapon at a customer and the 24-year-old clerk, and then demanded money.

The clerk then apparently retrieved a gun in self-defense from a hidden location and fired at the masked man. The customer ran from the scene and the masked robber “fell to the ground,” according to police.

At the time of the initial release by police, no information was available about the type of weapon the suspect displayed, or the type of weapon the clerk used, or the number of shot(s) that were fired by the store clerk.

Wauconda Fire District firefighter/paramedics also responded to the scene and transported the man shot to Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington, where he was pronounced dead at 9:42 p.m.

There were no reports of other injuries.

Lake County State’s Attorney Michael Nerheim has been notified and Wauconda police are investigating the shooting.

Police were not initially able to confirm the identity of the suspect, except that he was a white male about 6 feet tall — possibly in his 20s or 30s. Police are checking for a fingerprint match, and may proceed with a DNA analysis to determine the suspect’s identity. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday afternoon.
