The NOAA Storm Prediction Center Convective Outlook posted at 11:42 a.m. Monday an area of increased risk of tornadoes near Chicagoland. The risk level places a 5 percent risk of a tornado within 25 miles of any point in an area including the City of Chicago and nearby suburbs. A 10 percent risk exists in the areas southwest of Chicago where tornadoes have already struck earlier this summer.

Clear skies have allowed significant heating of the area, high dew points have been observed as expected, a nearby jet streak (maximum wind speeds within a jet stream), and wind shear all provide the factors for instability and for the development of clusters of severe thunderstorms and possibly strong tornadoes, high winds, large hail and torrential rainfall with flash flooding.

Early Monday afternoon, the precise tracking for the most severe weather across northern Illinois was not yet known. The tracking is expected to develop in north central Illinois and track southeast, but it is unknown if the track would occur over Chicago or southwest of Chicago. Currently the Storm Prediction Center has the area far southwest of Chicago.
