Boy, Age 5, Dies Overnight After Being Hit by Car on Palatine Rd Near Winston Dr, Palatine

The 5-year-old boy, who was hit by a car on Palatine Road about 4:15 p.m. Monday, died at Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago at 1:26 a.m. The boy was transported by Palatine Fire Department firefighter/paramedics to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights. He was transported in critical condition by a medical transport helicopter to Lurie Children’s Hospital on Monday evening.

No citations have been issued by police, and the crash remains under investigation. A detailed investigation included aerial photographs using a fire department ladder truck, pictures of homes on the north side of Palatine Road, measurements of the width of the sidewalk, and the routine marker measurements along the roadway of the accident scene.

Witnesses reported the boy was walking alone and was not crossing in a crosswalk when he was hit. The vehicle that hit the boy was eastbound on Palatine Road and was stopped in the median lane about 600 feet east of the intersection of Palatine Road and Winston Drive.

Palatine police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 4:16 PM Monday to the report of the child hit by the car near Palatine Road and Winston Drive Palatine, IL. Police on scene reported the injured victim was in the westbound lanes of Palatine Road.

The vehicle that hit the boy is a silver 2006 Hyundai Sonata — driven by a 53-year-old man from Bartlett.

Police blocked westbound Palatine Road between Winston Drive in Palatine and Kennicott Avenue in Arlington Heights; and police blocked eastbound Palatine Road between Winston Drive and Route 53 for an extended accident investigation.

Westbound Palatine Road was backed up and congested to about Schoenbeck Road or Route 83 and points east.

Police were working the extended accident investigation/accident reconstruction operation until at least 815 p.m. Monday.
