A fourth-floor balcony of a San Francisco Bay Area apartment building collapsed early Tuesday, killing six Irish students and leaving seven or eight other people injured.

At least six people were killed and seven or eight were seriously injured about 12:40 a.m. Tuesday at 2020 Kittredge Street Berkeley when a balcony collapsed at an apartment building. Most or all of the victims were young Irish tourists — possibly celebrating at a birthday party.

Officer Byron White of the Berkeley Police said 13 people were on the fourth-floor balcony when it collapsed, sending debris and people falling to the street. About an hour before the collapse, police had received a call of a loud party, according to Officer White.

A spokeswoman for the Irish Embassy in Washington, Siobhan Miley, confirmed that at least four of the dead were Irish citizens.

A number of young Irish citizens died following the collapse of a balcony in Berkeley, California near the University of California, Berkeley.
