UPDATE: It was down to the wire as employees were still stocking shelves as the ribbon cutting ceremony was underway, but the new Joe Caputo & Sons Fruit Market grocery store at 325 East Palatine Road is open.

The new Joe Caputo & Sons Fruit Market grocery store showed signs it was getting close to opening at Arlington Heights Road earlier this week. A temporary sign displayed June 24, 2014 at the front of the store displayed “Now Open” but the grocer was not yet open for grocery sales, as of Thursday. The former corporate-owned Dominick’s store in Arlington Heights is the new home for the highly anticipated Arlington Heights location of the family-owned independent grocery store Joe Caputo & Sons Fruit Market. The store’s expansion into Arlington Heights was announced Saturday, January 25, 2014.

The grocer is taking over four former Dominick’s locations:

Arlington Heights
325 East Palatine Road

Elk Grove Village
980 Elk Grove Town Center

Des Plaines
1555 Lee Street (moving from 959 E Oakton Street)

4125 Dundee Road

Caputo’s has existing stores in Des Plaines and a store in Algonquin, and a store as close as Palatine, but in recent years the drive west on Rand Road can be a slow trip. Joe Caputo & Sons opened the business in 1989 in Des Plaines.

Safeway, owners of Dominick’s, announced in October that the company was exiting the Chicago market and that all Dominick’s stores would close.

Three major grocery chains have bought or leased some of the 72 former Dominick’s locations.
