Indiana Woman Endangers Her Child During High-Speed Chase in Michigan

Dashcam video shows the mom being arrested after driving dangerously with her daughter on her lap.

The Michigan State Police White Pigeon Detachment responded Sunday when they were notified by the Kosciusko County Indiana Sheriff’s Department that they were searching for a woman accused of abducting her daughter during a supervised visit. Kosciusko County Sheriff’s police werer using a GPS signal from the woman’s cellphone, which indicated the cell phone was in the area of US-12 and Blue School Road in St. Joseph County, Michigan.

A Michigan trooper found the woman’s vehicle in Mottville Township around 5:30 p.m. Sunday and attempted to arrest the her, but she drove off during a traffic stop with her child still in the car.

Michigan State Police troopers, St. Joseph County Sheriff’s deputies and officers with White Pigeon Police were involved in the resulting high-speed chase through St. Joseph County. During the pursuit, the mother removed the girl’s seat belt and put the girl in her lap.

Constantine, Michigan police officers positioned their officers ahead of the chase on northbound US-131 and put out stop sticks. When the vehicle hit the stop sticks, the tires were damaged, but the woman kept driving.

When one of the vehicle’s tires came off its rim and two tires became flat, the woman pulled over and tried to flee on foot while carrying her daughter. The woman tried to fight with police officers, but they were able to arrest her without using excessive force.

Police found suspected cocaine during a search of the vehicle.

The woman is facing felony charges of fleeing and eluding, possession of narcotics, and resisting and obstructing justice. She also is facing misdemeanor charges of operating under the influence and child endangerment, according to Michigan State Police.

The suspect’s daughter was in police custody until she was released to other family members who arrived to pick her up.
