Paul Mellor, who was rescued Wednesday from a pond immediately after witnesses saw his Honda Accord enter a pond at Algonquin Commons shopping center Wednesday died today. Algonquin-Lake in the Hills firefighters jumped into the retention pond in the 1500 block of South Randall Road — near Corporate Parkway — and immediately rescued Paul Mellor by pulling him through the sunroof. Witnesses saw rescuers perform CPR at the scene and transfer him to an ambulance.

Firefighters reported Mellor was under water for several minutes while forcible entry techniques were used to enter the vehicle, and remove him from the vehicle. Firefighters then performed Advanced Life Support procedures, including CPR, as soon as they reached shore at the small pond and transferred Mellor to an awaiting ambulance. Mellor was breathing on his own after medical treatment, but remained in critical condition Wednesday through Friday at Advocate Sherman Hospital.
