Which Weather Condition Slows the Spring Thaw? Ice Covered Great Lakes or Deep Snow Pack

Lake Michigan ice coverage is nearing record levels this winter. The National Weather Service Chicago compares Lake Michigan ice coverage of previous year and subsequent spring and early summer weather along the lake front to see if a correlation exists.

A recently published National Weather Service Chicago office video on YouTube reports that little correlation is detected between Lake Michigan ice cover and cold Lake Michigan onshore breezes.

Snow cover is another story, however. The Weather Channel reports that the deep snow cover will slow down the Spring thaw. Snow pack refrigerates the air above, and reflects heat and light of the earth’s surface

Weather Channel Meteorologist Nick Wiltgen discusses the warm up that is attempting to take place in the Midwest.
