Illinois State Police were involved in a high speed chase starting about 9:44 PM Thursday for a report that initially involved a wrong way driver I-294 near Willow Springs Road. The vehicle, a red newer model Grand Am 2-door was northbound in the southbound lanes — initially reported to be driving on the shoulder about 45 mph. After stopping for an IDOT maintenance truck, the vehicle, then charged at the truck and continued northbound in the southbound lanes at about 70 mph to 80 mph. The vehicle turned around at about the 34 mile marker (near the Eisenhower expressway) and headed southbound in the southbound lanes after hitting an Illinois State Police squad and causing minor damage.
A pursuit headed southbound about 80 mph to I-88. The pursuit headed westbound on I-88. The vehicle slowed down suddenly and stopped near Ogden Avenue on I-88. Illinois State Troopers reported the suspect’s vehicle was possibly on fire. No confirmation on fire — possibly overheated. A second Illinois State Trooper squad car was also hit — receiving minor damage.
The suspect was in custody by 10:09 p.m. The suspect was possibly already wanted prior to the wrong way driving incident. The subject was transported to a local hospital. No further details available at this time.
