CNN’s Dr. Gupta travels to Hogewey, a small village in Weesp, the Netherlands, where every resident has severe dementia (just over 23 minutes).

Hogeway was built in 2009 on four acres. Hogewey is a gated model village setting in Weesp, in The Netherlands. Hogeway is notable because it has been designed specifically as a pioneering care facility for elderly people with dementia. The major advances achieved by the approach of all-day reminiscence therapy at Hogewey, compared to traditional nursing homes, is that the residents with dementia are more active and require less medication.

Doctors, nurses and caretakers work with the 152 residents to provide the 24-hour care.

The four-acre community has 23 housing units and seven themes, such as crafts, culture, religion, and urban. Weesp is town and a municipality in the Netherlands with a population of 17,533 (2010).

Dementia is a serious loss of global cognitive ability in a previously unimpaired person, beyond what might be expected from normal aging. Affected cognitive areas can be memory, attention, language, and problem solving that is present for at least six months to support a diagnosis of dementia. Short term dysfunction is known as delirium.
