Three people were critically injured when the outdoor deck behind a popular Miami-area sports bar collapsed during the NBA finals Thursday night. Dozens of people fell into the shallow waters of Biscayne Bay.
Miami-Dade firefighter/paramedics responded about 9:45 p.m. Thursday with about 50 fire/rescue units to Shucker’s Bar & Grill, 1819 79th Causeway, North Bay, Florida. Divers and helicopters with spotlights were deployed for search and rescue of victims. Water near the collapse is about 4 feet deep. Rescuers spoke with witnesses on the scene to attempt to account for persons they were accompanying at the time of the collapse.
Several citizen rescues occurred with people jumping in immediately after the collapse to save people that had already fallen into the water. About 100 people were watching the Miami Heat play the San Antonio Spurs.
Police shut down 79th Street (John F Kennedy Causeway) during rescue operations.
