“Flags In” Memorial Day Flags Placed at Arlington

Continuing a 40 year tradition, the 3rd U.S. Infantry placed flags at the grave markers of those buried in Arlington National Cemetery ahead of Memorial Day. The practice is known as, “flags in.”

Each year for the past 40 years, the 3rd U.S. Infantry (The Old Guard) has honored America’s fallen heroes by placing American flags before the gravestones and niches of service members buried at both Arlington National Cemetery and the U.S. Soldier’s and Airmen’s Home National Cemetery just prior to Memorial Day weekend.

‘Flags In’ at ‘Tomb Of The Unknowns’

The ceremony, known as Flags In, is performed to commemorate and honor U.S. military personnel ahead of Memorial Day weekend and has been conducted annually since 1948.
