Libertyville Fire Department responded just before noon on Memorial Day, May 27, 2013 to a fire at a vacant commercial/retail nursery building at the former Jamaican Gardens business, 14595 West Route 176 (Rockland Road/East Park Avenue) in Green Oaks near Libertyville. A box alarm was requested at about noon, followed by a box alarm to the second level at about 12:31 p.m.

Firefighters from Barrington, Buffalo Grove, Deerfield, Grayslake, Gurnee, Highwood, Lake Bluff, Lake Forest, Lake Villa, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Mundelein, Newport, North Chicago, Waukegan, Zion and other communities assisted Libertyville firefighters.

No injuries were reported. Firefighters used tower ladder trucks from Lake Forest and Countryside and at least one deck gun to fight the fire. Firefighters used a power saw to cut through a metal wall to access one section of the fire. Toward the end of the firefighting operations, the fire was fought in a large metal building on the west side of the property. The fire initially was reported on the east side of the complex of buildings and greenhouse near the former retail entrance.

There was some concern regarding burning fertilizer remaining at the site, as a hazardous material or explosive material. No explosions were reported, but heavy smoke was seen for miles. Route 176 was closed during firefighting operations.

Jamaican Gardens North closed December 2010 after 109 years in business — 40 of those years in Green Oaks/Libertyville near the Tri-State.
