After thorough investigation, Arlington Heights Police Department has charged Jeffrey Sterner with Reckless Discharge of a Firearm and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm While FOID Card Revoked.
On Saturday, May 4, 2013 at approximately 5:20 p.m. the Arlington Heights Police Department responded to the 6th floor of 151 W. Wing Street regarding gunshots being fired from inside a condominium.
A woman inside the unit was with her son who was despondent and threatening to take his life. The woman called 911 and reported her son had fired a gun several times inside the unit. The woman was able to disarm her son. The woman fled the condominium and was taken into protective custody by officers, while her son remained inside the unit.
The offender refused to exit the home and it was unknown if he had additional firearms. The Northern Illinois Police Alarm System (NIPAS) was activated. An exterior perimeter of the downtown area was immediately established and secured by Arlington Heights Police Department personnel and numerous officers from other agencies.
A coordinated effort was initiated by Arlington Heights Police Department Supervisors and NIPAS Staff to safely remove the suspect from his unit. After numerous attempts to have the suspect exit without a response, entry was forced and the subject was taken into custody, uninjured, and transported to Northwest Community Hospital (NWCH) for an evaluation.
The investigation revealed that the offender fired several gunshots, including one that exited his condominium through the front door and came to rest in a neighbor’s closet. The neighbor was not home. An extensive search of the surrounding area was performed and no victims or other property damage were found. No other firearms were found in the condominium.
Friday, May 10, 2013, the offender was released from Northwest Community Hospital and brought to the Arlington Heights Police Department Headquarters. The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office reviewed the investigation and approved the listed charges. At 1:30 p.m., the offender was taken at to the Rolling Meadows Courthouse for a bond hearing.
Sterner appeared before Judge Cataldo who set Sterner’s bond at $150.000. Sterner’s next court date is June 7th, 2013 at 9:00 a.m. room 109.
