Fire and Small Explosion in Underground Vault at Golf Rd and Meacham Rd, Schaumburg

Schaumburg police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 7:35 PM Friday to a report of an explosion underground at the southwest corner of Meacham and Golf Road. Police and firefighter/paramedics received a report that fire shot out of a “sewer” and blew the manhole cover off. Following the explosion smoke was coming out of the hole in the ground.

Firefighters reported that an underground high voltage Com Ed vault was on fire.

Three lanes of eastbound Golf Road including the right turn lane are blocked at Meacham Road. The southbound curb lane of Meacham Road at Golf Road is also blocked.

No word on any widespread on power outage.
