Officials say they are still investigating the cause of the riot at a California prison Wednesday that left thirteen people wounded, including one inmate shot.

One inmate was shot, and at least 12 others were taken to the hospital after being stabbed or slashed during a riot at California State Prison, Sacramento in Folsom.

Correctional officers tried to stops the riot by firing non-lethal rounds of an unspecified type, and six potentially lethal shots from a rifle. As a standard procedure, the state officials plan to investigate the decision to use potentially deadly force.

The 2,800-inmate maximum-security facility opened in 1986, and is commonly known as ‘New Folsom’ because it is close to Folsom State Prison, located 20 miles east of Sacramento.
