Schaumburg police received a report about 9:39 p.m. Sunday from people who heard a huge explosion and saw a large orange glow.
After police arrived they spoke with several people who thought the noise came from the Church of the Holy Spirit parking lot. About four minutes later police on the scene saw something hovering in the sky.
One police officer asked others, “Do you got something up in the sky here. Look up, it looks like something is in the sky above the school.”
“Believe it or not, I see it too. I don’t know what it is. ”
“It’s a red light.”
“Is anybody going to tell me what’s in the sky?”
“It looks like a plane or helicopter, but I can’t tell how high it is.”
“It’s not moving very fast or very far, but it doesn’t look like it’s on fire, but it’s a red glow, though.”
Police answered the dispatcher that they couldn’t tell what it is and that it was fading … after the dispatcher asked if they needed to call the control tower — presumably the O’Hare International Airport control tower.
Firefighters in the area found nothing at the original caller’s house, and checked fields in the area.
Some people reported a very large orange object in the sky. Schaumburg police learned that residents in Hoffman Estates also reported seeing and hearing the object.
One police officer said that people in the area thought it might be fireworks. One police officer replied, “What about the UFO?”
Police also received a report that a person had a video camera running and was videotaping the incident.
In the past a man has flown a kite with LED lights on the kite in the area. No word on any repeat performance or contact again with that person.
Right now authorities are working on the belief that the object was possibly some type of homemade explosive device, but no evidence of the incident or object was ongoing.
