Hoffman Estates police responded just before noon, Thursday May 31, 2012 to a report of a disturbance in the hallways of Conant High School. Schaumburg police responded for backup about 12:01 p.m. About 11:50 a.m. students were holding signs over their heads and began yelling and shoving each other in the hallways. Students were also glitter bombing and spraying silly string while jumping up-and-down and shouting “2-0-1-2” and “YOLO.” In the video a student is crowdsurfing — from being past overhead by the crowd.

The majority of police cleared the scene about 12:13 p.m. Thursday.

The incident also involved students chanting “What is Up” and “YOLO” for You Only Live Once.

Three students taken into custody — two juveniles and one adult. One of the offenders, who is an adult resident of Hoffman Estates and a student of Conant, was charged with disorderly conduct for continuing to throw objects after being told to stop by teachers and police.

Several parents of Conant students arrived at school Friday morning to complain that teachers over-reacted and roughed up some students.

School administrators learned of the prank in advance, and told students they could throw glitter, display signs and carry out harmless pranks in an empty classroom to avoid consequences. However, the students, as shown in at least two videos did not comply, and the disturbance spilled out into hallways. Thrown objects and crowding became a hazard, according to administrators and teachers. That’s when the police were called.

Enrollment at James B. Conant High School is about 2100 students with about 160 teachers.
