House Speaker Michael Madigan Agrees to Back Off on Shifting Pension Cost to Local School Boards

Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan backed off his demand that suburban and Downstate school districts pay more toward teacher retirement. Madigan says he still believes that local school board fulfill the expense of teacher pensions — an act that would certainly drive up real estate taxes for homeowners. Madigan says he agrees to remove the cost-shif language because it is what Gov. Pat Quinn wants, not what he wants.
