Following the national debate over the killing of Trayvon Martin, 20th Century Fox has decided to pull the trailer for the Ben Stiller movie Neighborhood Watch.

The comedy “Neighborhood Watch” cost about $60 million to $70 million to produce. Entertainment writers are speculating the movie will get pushed back to the Fall season, instead of the prime time summer release slot.

Actual neighborhood watches are not designed to be vigilante organizations. The organizations are supposed to keep an eye on the neighborhood for criminal activities — especially vandalism, criminal damage to property, and burglaries.

Neighborhood watch members are instructed to contact the police and not intervene with offenders.

Trayvon Martin was an African American teenager residing in Sanford, Florida who was shot and killed by George Zimmerman, 28, a community watch captain. Martin, who was unarmed, was shot while walking home from a convenience store. As information on the incident unfolds, one side emphasizes an innocent teen carrying a bag of Skittles was wrongly shot and killed. On the other side, investigators want the facts to determine whether it’s true that an encounter with a suspicious person went bad — questioning whether Trayvon Martin was killed by Zimmerman in an act of self-defense or whether he was murdered. According to a police report Zimmerman had grass on his back and he was bleeding from the nose and the back of his head.

The incident has grown to national status with public statements from civil rights leaders and public officials including President Barack Obama, who said if he had a son he would look like Trayvon Martin; Reverend Al Sharpton; Jesse Jackson; and Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi.

Only time will tell if the actual neighborhood watch concept will come under politically correct assault until it has a ridiculous reputation — perhaps requiring a name change. See Euphemism …
